Frank Petronio é um fotógrafo profissional especializado em retratos artísticos, uma modalidade que iniciou em 2006 com modelos amadores e alternativos que conheceu através de redes sociais na Internet. A uma primeira abordagem antropológica sucedeu a aproximação com os modelos (principalmente mulheres) e a familiarização com os seus modos de vida.

Segundo o próprio, tornou-se fotógrafo a sério a partir de 1983, após uma licenciatura pela Universidade de Oregon e um bacharelato em Design Visual. Depois de dois anos a trabalhar como assistente de fotografia, montou o seu próprio estúdio em 1986.

A partir de 1990 viaja pela América e Europa fazendo trabalhos comerciais, principalmente para agências de publicidade. Actualmente, faz workshops sobre fotografia (International Center for Photography e Visual Studies Workshop, Rochester, New York; Center for Creative Imaging, Maine; Palm Beach Photo Workshops, Florida, etc.) e dá aulas na George Eastman House e no Rochester Institute of Technology, de New York, onde vive.

Participou em diversas exposições, nomeadamente na Bienal de Finger Lakes e na Memorial Art Gallery, em Rochester.

I am a full-time commercial and fine-art photographer specializing in portraiture. I am well-known for photographing amateur and alternative models that I’ve found online through social networking websites. When I started the project in 2006, I approached my subjects with a detached, anthropological perspective... but their warmth and grace quickly won me over and in short order I began making photos that celebrated my subject’s poise and beauty.

Even though most of my images are made with film, all of my photos are edited, modified, and delivered digitally.

Since I starting photographing in 1983, I have done a wide range of work, including national ad campaigns and annual reports for Fortune 500 companies. I’ve also exhibited, taught, and traveled widely.

Along the way I built some of the first large corporate websites and have freelanced as a creative director, graphic designer, art director and copywriter. [FRANK PETRONIO]
