Carlotta Maitland Smith nasceu em Londres, em 1974, filha de pais de origem italiana e britânica, mas viveu a maior parte do tempo em França. Estudou fotografia no International Photographic Institute, de Paris, e no International Centre of Photography, de Nova Iorque. Possui ainda uma especialização em Línguas (University College of London).

Uma curiosidade insaciável de conhecer pessoas de diferentes origens e estilos de vida leva-a a viajar com regularidade. O seu trabalho é fundamentalmente documental, com incursões de cariz ambiental.

A sua série mais recente — Italian Americans — tem sido amplamente exposta e foi destaque na Time Magazine. Documenta uma comunidade de italo-americanos originários da ilha de Ponza, ao largo da costa oeste da Itália, que emigraram para a área de New York (Bronx) no início do século passado. Aborda os conflitos provocados por uma forte aculturação, a que se têm oposto as gerações mais velhas em claro conflito com os seus filhos e netos, que estão a perder os costumes e as tradições europeias.

Carlotta Maitland Smith is a freelance photographer based in Europe, specializing in documentary and environmental portraiture.

She studied photography at both SPEOS (Paris International Photographic Institute) and ICP (International Centre of Photography, New York), and has a joint-honours degree in languages from University College London. With a quenchless curiosity to learn about people from other backgrounds and walks of life, Carlotta has travelled extensively, photographing several communities around the world.

Her most recent work has been widely exhibited and is featured on the website of Time Magazine. It documents a community of Italian Americans that emigrated to New York’s Bronx area in the 1920s, but that all originate from the island of Ponza off the west coast of Italy, where Carlotta herself has spent much of her life. In working with this community, she was fascinated to find herself to be documenting a clear example of immigrant cultures world-wide that, mixed with others, are changing fast. She had stumbled upon a pivotal moment in time that balances between the dedication and commitment of the elderly first generations desperately trying to cling on to their roots and pass down cultural values to grand-children, and the younger generations who mostly feel that their Italian links are too far removed to be part of their lives today.
